Uric Acid Kidney Stones- What Kind of Kidney Stone do you have?

There are different kinds of kidney stones. About 80% of kidney stones happen to calcium oxalate stones and are due to high blood calcium levels.

Struvite stones are the only kidney stone that isn't a metabolic problem. Instead struvite stones are usally caused by infection. Women are more likely to get this type of kidney stone if they have a recurring problem with urinary tract infections.

Cystine stones are caused by a rare congenital defect that can cause stones composed of cystine to form in the kidney called cystinuria.

Uric acid kidney stones on the other hand happen when the urine excreted is too low in comparison to uric acid in the bloodstream on the whole. This type of kidney stone is closely associated with gout. If you have had gout before or suffer from frequent gout attacks, then you are likely to experience a uric acid kidney stone.

Uric Acid Kidney Stones Home Remedies

Since Uric Acid Kidney stones are typically seen in people who have gout attacks, the first thing to understand is what causes gout. After all, if you can treat the symptoms of gout, then chances are great that you can lower your risk of getting this painful ailment.

Uric Acid is found throughout your body and it is a normal by product of a protein enzyme, an enzyme that helps to break down food in your body. While there are foods that are high in purine that can trigger gout, the reality is that a proper diet can help you eliminate the chances of getting it. So here is what happens:

You eat some food.

Your body breaks down and starts the digestive process. This includes releasing enzymes in your stomach to help break down the food so it can be processed.

It just so happens that these same enzymes release by products of this process...one being uric acid.

Typically, in a healthy body, it is processed normally and the uric acid is released in the urine.

For gout sufferers, it is different though. They have so much uric acid that it can't be processed properly and instead gets released into the blood stream.

The uric acid hangs around in the bloodstream until it finds its way into the tissues (usually in the joints of the foot) where it crystallizes causing serious pain.

A uric acid kidney stone is the same thing EXCEPT rather than it depositing into the joints, it winds up in the urinary canal where it gets lodged until it is expelled.

So, it is a double whammy.....Not only are you risking gout, but you may also wind up with painful uric acid kidney stones.

Uric Acid Kidney Stones and Type 2 Diabetes

If you have type 2 diabetes, then you are at an increased risk of developing uric acid kidney stones. According to a recent study by UT Southwestern Medical Center, researchers discovered a connection between diabetes and high levels of uric acid in the bloodstream. What this means for the 18 million people who live with diabetes is that they are at a greater risk of developing uric acid kidney stones.

Uric Acid Kidney stones are harder to diagnose than other stones because they don't show up in regular abdominal x-rays, giving the kidney stone more time to grow.

How pass a kidney stone naturally....

Kidney stones are very painful to pass. The good news is that in most cases they will pass. Here are some suggestions to make them pass more quickly....

  • Water is one of the best remedies to make kidney stones pass quickly- Drink lots of it. It will help move the stones through. If you have had kidney stones before, I suggest you drink at least 14 glasses a day.
  • Drink Lemonade, lemon juice, unsweetened cranberry juice, ect- These types of drinks do something that water can't do. They affect the pH balance of your urine and help acidify it to break up the stones. Lemon juice is a wonderful preventative measure to preventing kidney stones.
  • Reduce your intake of animal proteins to prevent uric acid kidney stones- Because uric acid buildup is primarily caused by enzymes trying to break down proteins, it only makes sense that the less animal protein you eat, the less uric acid you create.

I too had uric kidney stones which was found out just lately. Goo news is that they were not too big yet to obstruct my urinary activities. The nephrologist told me to refrain from taking in herbal meds and potassium citrate tabs, water of greater amount intake is what he strongly asserted. For now, i religiously took his advise and a control of foods rich in purine so that i can move on with this very bothering health problem.

I woke up at 2am to use the bathroom. As I sat there, I noticed something moving in the area of my right kidney, and then it became quite painful. No matter what I tried, the pain would not lessen or go away. I was extremely nauseated and I vomited profusely. Finally, at 5:30am I called a co-worker (I work at the local hospital), and asked if she would take me to the ER. I was given pain meds, a STENT in my ureter, then shock wave lithotripsy to break up the 2cm stone in my right kidney. I still have the stent in and I will go for a limited CT scan to see if there is anything left. If all looks good - I will have the stent removed.

I just received a new juicer and will be doing a juice fast once the stent is out.

I have passed over 80 uric acid kidney stones and mostly recently passed a 1.2 cm stones. Yes, shouldn't be passable and thought I was going to die (worse than my labor). I too take Potassium Citrate but was curious of anyone else thought maybe they were linked to apartame. This has been so disruptive to my life and I need to make drastic changes soon. Thoughts on the aspartame??

Following a routine blood test, traces of blood were found in my urine. The echography showed a 2.6 cm stag horn stone in my left kidney.I was requested to perform a CT scan since it was translucent on the radiography.Tiny pieces were expelled from my urine and found to be uric acid stones upon analysis.I am actually on treatment hoping it will flush away and i am drinking about 3 litres of water daily.

I have had stones for 7 years. I pass them quite frequently, more easily than the average person. but I continued with the beer and animal protein. Well, I had a double whammy last week, when I had an 8.8 mm stone stuck in my tract on my right side, and an 8 mm and a 5mm logjammed on my left side. My urologist found that since they were too high in the tract (near the kidney), he simply pushed them back into the kidney, gave me two stints, and I'm now on Potassium Citrate pills to break up and shrink the stones. When they're small enough the stints will come out. I am NOW going to significantly cut back on beer and animal protein. This was a wake up call for me!

I live in Australia and have a 1.2cm stone stuck in my ureta at present. Docs didnt pick it up at first due to not showing on x-ray. This is not my first stone. First was 1.6cm. Currently have stent in place and awaiting blasting procedure. This is very informative as there is not much out there about these types of stones. thank you :)

In my above post I actually meant 3 to 4 mm, not cm. That would have been a whole different situation! The more I read about kidney stones the more I'm unsure if thats what I had. It might have been a bladder stone instead. Either way, I had no idea I had one until it was almost all the way out. This doesn't sound right, does it?

I had a urinary tract infection about 2 weeks ago, so I drank a ton of water and cranberry juice and took some over the counter medicine (AZO). It cleared up the infection for the most part, but on occasion I would have slight discomfort urinating still. Yesterday I ejaculated and felt like something was in the way and then noticed a lump half way up my penis. I could feel the stone in there with my fingers and instantly became nervous due to the size of the obstruction. I didn't urinate for a few hours out of fear, but when I did the stone came out very quickly. It was around 3 to 4 cm big and fairly jagged. I don't ever want to go through that again, but I feel that I got lucky since it didn't hurt nearly as bad as it probably should have.

I am suffering from a Uric Acid Kidney Stone right now. I had a severe attack on tuesday and they put in a stint to help pass the stone and so my urine would pass. This is good info for me. I passed three stones last week and I am working on this one now.

I SUFFERED FOR SEVERAL MONTHS WITH A 8MM STONE. WHICH HAD TO HAVE SURGERY TWICE. MY DOCTOR DID NOT BELIEVE THAT MY PAIN WAS FROM THIS STONE IN THE BEGINNIG. NOT UNTIL AFTER HAVING ONE UNSUCESSFUL SURGERY AND A VERY BAD ATTACH DID THE DOCTOR BELIEVE AND FINALLY BROKE THE STONE UP ON THE SECOND SURGERY.

THANKS FOR THE MUCH NEEDED INFORMAATION. MAYBE THIS WILL HELP ME TO HELP ME TO PREVENT FURTHER STONES.

Transfer of kidney calculus (in) refers to the renal pelvis and renal pelvis, connect with ureteral stones department. Most of the renal pelvis, located in renal parenchymal calculi. Films that are single or multiple renal area round, oval or blunt triangle density, high density of uniform. Edge smooth, but also has more than a mulberry not smooth. Kidney stones urinary formation is the main part of any other part, can be in the kidney stones, ureter stone, and almost all the kidney stones from more than any other parts of kidney stones, so direct injury early diagnosis and treatment are very important.

Have chronic uric acid stones. sometimes pass 2-3 mm stones every 2-3 wks. Had to have surgery for the largest 6 yrs ago-3.1 cm (centimeters). Was on Sodium Bicarb until it caused my low Bp (62/48 ) to reach 120/80. My urine pH stayed in 4.5-5 range. Couldn't change it. Went to pH range of 6 last summer on it's own so stones slowed down. Now on Allupurinal because Uricit K caused heart rythm problems. Still have stones that are orange/rust color. Comes out like sand 10-15 small pieces.

had two stones one 9 mm and one 10 mm had to have one removed surgically, other one laying in the bottom of left kidney, not giving me any problems right now.

14 glasses of water? That's a lot. If there is enough water in the diet, eg from fruits and soup, there is no way a person can drink another 14 glasses of water.

Just passed my 3rd kidney stone Since Sept 14th, it took until Oct 10 for the first one to pass, Last one was Oct 30,2009. This is something i have dealt with since 1988. they are very unpleasant.

vbg 2 years ago

Yes, in Sept. 2009 I passed a 1.2 cm uric acid stone from my left kidney.

The ordeal began at 3:30 AM and did not end until 1:30 PM the same day.

The only relief I could find to ease the pain was the application of a heating pad to my left back and side.

I drank gallons cranberry juice and water.
