TMJ Home Remedies
84TMJ Home Remedies
There are some doctors and professionals out there that will tell you that they can cure TMJ disorder. The problem with this is that it usually entails invasive and expensive surgeries. I will tell you that I recommend that you try some of the less invasive measures before you jump into a costly surgery that may or may not work. The truth is that there are TMJ home remedies that you can try.
Most people assume that those who suffer from TMJ are suffering because of the typical causes such as grinding the teeth or trauma to the jaw. The reality is that in a lot of cases, you can find a remedy simply by adjusting your diet. Nutritional deficiencies in Calcium and Magnesium could be two likely causes of TMJ as well as muscular and spinal alignment issues. In this hub, I plan to show some alternatives to the same old same old when it comes to TMJ syndrome. These include Homeopathy treatments for TMJ as well as acupressure and massage. Finally, I will give you a short list of herbal and dietary supplements you can add to your diet that may help you with TMJ.
TMJ Home Remedies
TMJ and Acupressure
There are also certain meridian points that may help you with TMJ and the pain it causes. These include:
- Large Intestine 4 which helps relieve pain in the head and jaw. It relaxes the facial muscles.
- Pericardium 6 helps to ease panic and anxiety. It is located on the wrist which makes it very easy to administer whenever you feel your jaw tense up.
- Gallbladder 20 helps with pain associated with the neck and head.
- If you grind your teeth at night, you should take a few minutes before you go to sleep and work on Lung 1. Clear your mind and breathe deep.
Homeopathic Remedies for TMJ
In order to do a homeopathic remedy, you need to choose a remedy that best describes your symptoms.
If you have acute TMJ pain, you should take a 30C potency 4 times a day.
For Chronic TMJ pain, take a 6x,12x,6c,12c or 30c twice daily for 2 weeks to see if you are receiving positive results. If so, stop taking unless your symptoms return.
- Arnica is a homeopathic remedy used for deep bruising pain. This is extremely effective if your TMJ is caused by an injury.
- Rhus Toxicodendron is for a stiff jaw that loosens up during the day but then starts to stiffen again at night. Try this warm as it will help the jaw feel better quicker.
- Kali Phosphorica helps to reduce nerve pain as well as stress.
- Ignatia is for those who are very sensitive to stress which causes a tightening in the jaw muscles. A homeopathic practitioner will usually prescribe this treatment after emotional grief or trauma.
- Magnesia Phosphorica helps tight muscles that tend to spasm. Like Rhus Toxicdendron, it is best applied warm.
TMj and Your Diet...there may be a connection
Since sugar may play a factor with TMJ, I recommend (as I do with all ailments) a sensible diet plan that involves organic meats and raw or lightly steamed vegetables. You can find out more information on my other hub, sensible diet plans.
In addition to this, you may benefit from a 3 day juice fasting diet which will help clear your body of sugar. It may work for you.
Vitamins and Supplaments that can Help with TMJ
In addition to homeopathy and acupressure, there are some supplements that I recommend you to try to help cure TMJ. Certain Vitamins, Minerals and herbal supplements will help to relax the nervous system and helps to relax tight muscles.
- Valerian officinalis- Valerian will help to reduce the effects of stress and tight muscles.
- Magnesium- This mineral is TMJ specific and will help relax the nervous system, most notably, the muscles surrounding the jaw.
- Kava- Kava is great for stress and anxiety and also helps to relax the nervous system.
- Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)- MSM helps reduce inflammation and muscle spasms.
- B-Complex- Helps to reduce the effects of stress.
- Glucosamine Sulfate helps to build cartilage. This is a very good treatment for those who have cartilage deterioration in the jaw (TMJ).

I have been diagnosed with TMJ disorder for years now. I wore a mouth appliance/ splint before and it helped a bit but when i stopped using it the pain and the sore facial muscle started all over again. I am trying the tongue to roof of the mouth exercise everyday. Hope it works!
Wow, is that picture of the really bad tmj one of your patients? Were you able to cure him? I have TMJ and the doctors haven't been able to help me....
Wow I didn't know about all those vitamins. Great stuff.
Another thing that is sort of related to diet i guess... is to eat foods that don't require to much work for your jaw.
eg. soups, smoothies etc etc, might not directly help TMJ, but makes life a lil' easier right? :)
Found this very interesting. I've bookmarked this so I can reread it to pick up any information I missed on the first read through.
Thanks for the help. I was told I wore the enamel off my teeth from tmj and yesterday a piece of my back tooth fell out. All because of tmj for at least 22 years. So dont wait until it gets that bad to do something.

Excellent! !!
I've had TMJ for over 25 years and been avoiding a bite block, now I'm in tremendous pain. I only hope I didn't do more damage
My jaw is tight, headache, ear ache and a crowned tooth with a root canal that is wiggling.
All I care about is relieving the pain now. Thanks again
