What is Syndrome X?

As the world becomes more and more like Americans, diet wise, you are going to find that people that are suffering from syndrom X as time wears on.  The reason for this is because this condition is actually a variety of health related issues that are all combined into one group.

These health issues, unfortunately are all closely tied together and are largely due to improper diet as well as diet deficiencies that center around metabolic response in the body.

If you are insulin resistant, have a propensity for glucose intolerence, or a currently dealing with diabetes, then chances are you know that other problems can arise from not getting your condition under control.

The reason why it is called syndrome "X" is because researchers in the past didn't really understand the condition.  X represents the unknown.  Today, it is understood to be a metabolic disorder.

If you have been diagnosed with Syndrome X, then chances are you will be prone to chronic illnesses such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and even cancer.

What is syndrome X?

Root Causes of Syndrome X

There are many root causes for syndrome X but researchers have been able to pinpoint some portions of the population that are more succeptible...

  • Hererdity-  This is in a very small portion of the population.  While many people like to claim that heredity is the reason for obesity, in reality it is just a tiny fragment of the population.
  • Unhealthy diet-  If you are eating a diet that is composed of refined and processed foods, then chances are you are not getting enough of the "good" stuff that helps to process and control your insulin levels.
  • Lack of Exercise- Exercise does so much more than simply keeps you fit and trim.  Exercise is also responsible for blood flow and encourages the stable glucose levels in the body.
  • Obesity
  • Stress, often chronic-  If you are constantly stressed, this could cause an hormonal imbalance.

Signs and Symptoms of Syndrome X

Here are some signs that you may have syndrome X....

  1. You have excess fat around the belly or the chest- The "apple shaped" body is one indicator of a sign that you may have a problem with insulin resistance. Insulin promotes fat storage around the belly and the chest. The reason this is a problem is because fat is stored around surrounding organs.
  2. Abnormal Blood lipids- AKA...high cholesterol.
  3. You have high blood pressure
  4. You are insulin resistant or have a glucose intolerance.
There is something I should mention that you may be able to understand.  The syndrome X disease could be the same problem that many older people have with losing weight.  You should check out my How to Lose Weight Over 40 article I wrote.  In this article, I detail some of the hurdles that older people have to jump over in order to lose weight....and no, it has very little to do with diet.
