Best Eczema Treatments
Eczema is a common disorder of the skin that affects up to 15% of the the population in the world. Typically, eczema causes a dry, red and inflamed skin that is itchy and it usually affects the hands and feet but can be foun on the face and head or in the folds of the elbows and knees. In this hub, I am going to go over what eczema is as well as give what has worked for me...these are the best eczema treatments and best of all, they are natural.
Most of the serious cases are basically nothing more than allergic responses and in some cases this can be something other than a food allergy such as pollen. If you can identify the allergen then eczema should go away on its own. But if you continue to expose yourself to the allergy, then it may spread into a rash and become a chronic condition.
Stress is believed to aggravate the situation.
There are other factors that are associated with eczema or dermatitis. For instance, hypochlorhydria or "leaky gut syndrome" is believed to be a cause. In this, basically the intestines becomes porous, allowing particles of food directly into the bloodstream and possibly provoking an allergic reaction. In this case, the best eczema treatments would be one that is advised by your doctor.
Candidiasis is another cause of eczema and finally, although rare, a genetic bases weakness in the nezyme delta-6 desaturase.
All this said, the most likely cause of eczema is generally allergies.
Some common allergies include:
- perfumes
- cosmetics
- rubber
- medicated creams
- latex
- plants
- metals such as gold, silver and nickel
- Sometime the sun can create dermatitis

2 Forms of Eczema...
There are two common forms of eczema and both can be treated....the two forms are atopic dermatitis and Nummular Dermatitis.
Atopic dermatitis also known as AD or atopic eczema or infantile eczema is a condition that is predominately found in allergy-prone people. It targets the face and in the folds of the knees and elbows.
Some common triggers for AD is hot or cold weather, dry climates and exposure to allergens as well as mild infections such as colds.
Nummular or coin shaped dermatitis is a little more serious in which round (hence the coin shaped), scaling lesions form on the limbs.
This type of eczema is typically associated with intestinal and immune disorders. In fact, nummular dermatitis may be triggered by dairy and gluten.
Natural Treatment for Eczema
There are several ways to naturally treat eczema. The best way is to try to find the triggers that cause eczema, whether they are food allergens or associated with the environment and avoid the things that cause eczema. This is the best treatment for eczema. Find what is the source of causing your dermatitis and address it.
Because dermatitis is largely a problem that causes inflammation, there are many herbs that will help to reduce inflammation.
These include:
- Grape Seed Extract will help reduce the inflammation associated with dermatitis and aid the body in eliminating toxins...
- Oregon Grape Root naturally detoxifies the body and also helps reduce inflammation.
- Gotu Kola is good for the skin overall and actually promotes the formation of lipids and proteins...things that are good for the skin...
- Vitamin E is also good as it promotes healing of the skin and helps to relieve the itching that eczema causes.
- Wild pansy is known to successful treat various skin ailments such as psoriasis and acne. Many use this externally for infantile eczema.

Fresh Gotu kola is found in abundance in Sri Lanka
I prefer going to the Doctor and using a steroid cream until it is under control. Helps right away.
Great post!! I believe that diet is a huge factor when dealing with eczema. I my self saw a huge difference, when i cut out wheat, gluten and processed food in general. Going back to raw foods made a huge difference.
I look forward to more of your articles.
I always prefer natural treatments when it comes to infant eczema as they are safer and don't carry the potentially dangerous side effects. Although a combination of natural and medicated treatments can often complement each other.
Good hub Dr Alex. I have a 9 year old daughter who has suffered with eczema since the age of 6 months. We are now experiencing something of a breakthrough and it is my intention to write a hub about what has helped us recently.
By the way, I disagree totally with RamonB's comment above regarding the necessary use of 'large amounts of emollient' This is a mistake that I made and it is something that I will be addressing in my hub.
Maybe I missed it in your hub, but I didn't see any mention of using an emolient. Hydrating your skin is recognized as the single most important preventative measure you can take to help keep your eczema under control.
It's also important to be aware that you should be using large quantities of moisturizer, doctors are notoriously bad at under prescribing the amounts of emolient needed.
Good hub btw...
