Acid Reflux While Pregnant? Some Things you can do
64If you are pregnant, then there is a very good chance you will have acid reflux (heartburn) as your term progresses. And chances are even better that as your belly grows, acid indigestion will likely happen. The reason for this is because your child is pushing your stomach into your throat increasing the risk of developing heartburn. In this hub, I am going to give some simple advice on what you can do to help prevent acid reflux during your pregnancy.
5 Tips to Preventing Acid Reflux during Pregnancy
- One of the first things you should be aware of is that different foods will be more likely to cause heartburn. Stay away from spicy and greasy foods, coffee and anything with baking soda in it. Obviously, alcohol is a no-no but you are likely refraining from that anyway. Ironically, antacids that are supposed to suppress acid reflux can actually cause it. Stay away from alka-seltzer and other antacids that use sodium bicarbonate.
- Papaya tablets are a great preventative for reducing heartburn and its effects. There is also another product on the market that is perfect for pregnant women who have acid reflux called Acid-Ease. Both are safe and can be taken with meals or as needed. For more information on herbal remedies for acid reflux, you can check out my other hub.
- Be careful what you drink before you lay down. The reason is because of gravity. Anything that can posture itself against the esophageal sphincter could increase the chances of having GERD. Water is okay. Cokes and Sodas are a no-no a few hours before bed.
- A warm glass of rice or soy milk can help if you are already dealing with acid reflux.
- Stay upright after meals. This is because of the same reason why you don't want to drink anything before bed.
